Experimental/Post Metal/Progressive Rock
The Silnet Ballet:
Of all the “post” genres, “post-metal” may well be the most reviled. This is not to say that it doesn’t have its own adoring fans, but in comparison to other groupings like post-rock, post-classical, and even post-hardcore, post-metal just doesn’t put up the same numbers. Part of this may be that the genre has only ever produced one true superstar, Pelican, who produced a masterpiece in 2005 only to take a nosedive into 2007’s City of Echoes. Pretty much everyone else can be sorted into one of three groups: the chuggy, the chuggier, and the chuggiest. Every once in a while, though, an artist comes around who shows genuine potential, who shines with the possibility of breathing new life into the genre. Such an artist is being examined today: the Polish post-metal outfit Tides from Nebula.
The recipe for post-metal seems like it ought to be an easy one: blend the glittering arpeggios and raw emotional power of post-rock with the more brutal chords and vicious attack of the various types of metal, and let stew overnight. Think Explosions in the Sky or MONO meets Black Sabbath. But as with so many things, the difficulty arises in the question of balance. Most bands just can’t seem to find that sweet spot. This is the area where Tides from Nedula shines the brightest: by and large, they have managed to hit the balance just right, and the result is quite entertaining.
This is shown from the first song, mysteriously titled “Shall We?” Though the opening forty-five seconds of feedback are perhaps a little excessive, they soon give way to a nice melody that seems like it would be perfectly happy on a Temporary Residence Limited release. About halfway through the song, the guitars fade out momentarily; when they come back, they’re accompanied by a piano, and you get the feeling that Tides from Nebula is beginning to drive towards a big climax. When it comes, the word that immediately springs to mind is “crushing.” This heavy element continues into the next track, “Sleepmonster”, with a smooth transition hiding the fact that these are separate songs.
All in all, Aura is a release which shows enormous promise. Are Tides from Nebula the savior which the post-metal genre so desperately needs? Well, not quite yet. But out of the many bands I’ve heard in the last few years, Tides from Nebula bristles with the greatest possibility for greatness in a post-metal band. It wouldn’t just be a shame if this group doesn’t go on to even greater heights; it would be downright improbable.

FEAR is an American Punk Rock Band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1977, credited for influencing the American punk rock movement. Along with SEX PISTOLS , FEAR helped define the sound and style of Post, Neo-Punk, Jazz-Thrash-Fusion and theoretical physics! Although they actually formed during the first wave of punk back in 1977, FEAR didn't release an album until two years later- by which time they'd honed a blistering, thrashy attack that, for all its fury, was surprisingly tight and even intricate.
Musically, the band wasn't as crude as frontman Lee Ving's outrageous, humorously offensive lyrics, which were geared to piss off anyone within earshot; might have had you believe. His intellectualism was equaled only by his “sincere love of beer.”
The band has continued to be active since 1978, most recently with the release of The FEAR Record. Since FEAR began recording in 1979, bands such as A Perfect Circle, Soundgarden, Megadeth, Sacred Reich and Guns N' Roses have covered their songs, a new collaboration with Lee Ving and the Foo Fighters called The Sound City Players is also slated for fall release. Future plans involve forays into presidential politics, quantum physics, Lee is a registered Quantum Mechanic, and a post-Newtonian, sub-atomic particle, probability based, theoretical physics, guide- lined peaceful world, with liberty and justice for all.

Helloween, one of the most eminent melodic metal bands worldwide and - along with the Scorpions and Accept - Germany’s ultimate metal export, got their start exactly 25 years ago. A total of eleven headlining world tours took the band all over the globe, and their sensational show at the Monsters Of Rock in Castle Donington in front of more than 100,000 metalheads. Spectacular tours alongside Iron Maiden, Dio and Ozzy Osbourne, as well as their MTV Headbangers Ball US tour with Anthrax and Exodus remain unforgotten. Helloween have sold more than five million record! s and garnered 14 gold and 6 platinum awards globally, receiving two gold records in Germany. Now Andi Deris (vocals), Michael Weikath (guitar), Sascha Gerstner (guitar), Markus Großkopf (bass) and Daniel Löble (drums) have set out to prove that their great anthems ooze that special Helloween flair even with totally new arrangements.
UNARMED – Best Of 25th Anniversary is Helloween’s ‘thank-you’ to millions of fans old and new and will prove their exceptional position on the international metal scene. Instead of putting together a regular greatest hits compilation featuring their most successful tracks to celebrate this anniversary, the five band members completely rearranged the greatest melodies they had written in the course of their career to date. The album features Supercharge’s exceptional saxophonist Albie Donnelly, Hellsongs’s vocalist Harriet Ohlsson, pianist Matthias Ulmer, plus the 70-piece Prague Symphonic Orchestra and the choirs of! the Gregorian singers!
As a special surprise, Helloween have come up with ‘The Keeper´s Trilogy’ a stunning 17-minute medley of the songs ‘Halloween’, ‘Keeper Of The Seven Keys’ and ‘The King For A 1000 Years’, recorded in cooperation with the Prague Symphonic Orchestra and likely to send shivers of delight down the spine of every Helloween fan.
UNARMED – Best Of 25th Anniversary sees Helloween commemorate their 25th anniversary in their very own way. “We aren’t one of those bands who like to celebrate themselves,” says Weikath. “We wanted to say thank you in a special way to all our fans who have followed us through the past 25 years - to us, this album stands for an official celebration. We had a lot of fun recording our most important tracks in an entirely new ‘outfit’ and with new arrangements. Now we can’t wait to find out how our fans will react.”
If there is a golden thread throughout the more than 25 years of Helloween's history, 13 studio albums, countless headliner tours around the globe and more than 5 million records sold, then it is their special kind of attitude: don't take yourself too seriously and simply live statements like: "just have fun with the shit you're doing." Maybe it is exactly this easiness that allows HELLOWEEN to be one of the most constant bands of the genre while simultaneously being the one band who dares to experiment more than their musical peers. While some copycats would rather stick with the same old patterns, Andi Deris, Michael Weikath, Sascha Gerstner, Markus GroBkopf and Dani Liible aren't afraid of taking risks - and are rightfully rewarded with success. "7 Sinners" is definitively one of the fastest and hardest albums in the Helloween's history and it bursts with vitality. That might partly be due to the versatility of the various songwriters within the band, who over time have become so homogenous, that the 13 songs formed a unity on their own in the studio, but it may also be due to the fact that the album was recorded completely without a click track, which, considering the extreme speed of the songs is an impressive feat. Especially drummer Liible, who proves that his technique is at a world-class-level. Following his excellent inner clock, bass and drums drive tracks like "Are You Metal?", "Long Live The King" and "Who Is Mr. Madman?" to dizzying tempos. "7 Sinners" with its typically strong melodies and the tangible joy of playing, is a true metal album whose range reaches astonishing dimensions. It has become a cliche for metal band's to tout their newest opus as their "fastest" or "heaviest" album ever made, but in Helloween's case, "7 Sinners" is truly a return to form and is indeed their fastest and heaviest release in years. Helloween bass player Markus Grosskopf stated about the band's new material: "For all those out there who found our special best-of [CD] 'Unarmed' to be too smooth and calm, I have great news: The new album will hit you right in the face! It's gonna be very heavy and contain all [the classic] HELLOWEEN trademarks! Some songs are very powerful and hymnic, others contain the fastest bass-drum patterns our drummer Dani [Liible] ever played, and this means a lot!"
Is our civilization standing right on the edge of the abyss? Is the Maya calendar actually right, predicting the end of the world on December 21, 2012? “We will all survive the year 2012 and face an even more positive and energetic future.” Deris states. Helloween have documented how this future could look like, or rather sound like, on their latest studio album Straight Out Of Hell, scheduled after the alleged doomsday on January 22, 2013. It’s a work full of speed and toughness, with optimism and great joy of playing, featuring complex arrangements, strong hooks and plenty of catchy melodies. Or, let the facts speak for themselves, 13 mostly fast-paced songs that turn out to be impressively multi-layered and will completely delight all Helloween fans due to the different songwriters: Andi Deris, founding members Michael Weikath and Markus Großkopf, and guitarist Sascha Gerstner. Weikath explains, “Straight Out Of Hell is the consequent development of the two albums before. 7 Sinners was recorded more or less in the wake of Gambling With The Devil, while the new songs are a continuation of the 7 Sinners directives, only a little less doom bound and noticeably more positive. These songs will kick even the laziest listener’s ass.”
Since hitting the Bay Area Metal scene in early 2007, Hatchet quickly made a name for itself. They worked hard to gig as often as they could and also not compete with, but group together bands of the like to help strengthen the scene. Focusing on playing with other young starting thrash bands in their area, the fan base grew. Eventually they reached out to the neighboring Los Angeles thrash scene which was also flourishing and invited various bands up to the bay area to diversify their shows, and spread overall thrash metal awareness. Their sophomore effort, “Dawn of the End”, released on The End Records, showcases a much more aggressive and professionally oriented band. The group has stated its hunger to hit the road and prove that thrash metal is still a force to be reckoned with.
Great sorrow from the Norwegian legends ULVER. Music driven to despair, all sad and solitary, written and produced under the threat of extinction. SHADOWS OF THE SUN, is ULVER's 7th full-length album, the band's most personal record to date. Low-key, dark, and tragic.
"The most intimate and passionate ULVER release yet, "Shadows Of The Sun" is a somber and tragic masterpiece, a true reflection of the far inner reaches of the soul and heart..." - BW&BK
Sigh's 8th full-length album titled "Scenes from Hell" is even more intense, sinister, and triumphant than ever. This is the pure audio description of Hell, War and Death! With a real string quartet and real orchestral instruments such as trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba, flute, clarinet and so on, this will be the perfect score to the scenes from hell. Only the string score exceeds 100 pages, and we can assure that this is by far the most grandiose and powerful album by Sigh. Also this is Dr. Mikannibal's original album debut. This sexy worm-eater takes care of a half of the vocals along with the alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. Her saxphones give a new dimension to the album, and her growl makes it sound hundreds times more brutal than the previous albums. The vocal contributions from David Tibet (Current 93) and Kam Lee give a brilliant atmosphere of hell to the album. Especially David wrote and read the original text on "war" for it. His text-reading plays a roll as a bookend of the "Musica in Tempora Belli" part of the album. With the cover artwork by Eliran Kantor, which is the perfect reflection of what "Scenes from Hell" is about, it is a total art from hell.
Originally released in 2001, Sigh's 'Imaginary Sonicscape' is the Japanese avant-garde black metal group's most psychedelic and exotic album. Featuring cover art by Stephen O'Malley (SUNN O))), Southern Lord Records), this reissue is 'Imaginary Sonicscape' as it was originally conceived by the band, introducing two songs cut from the original release. Remastered by James Murphy!
The ultimate re-issue of one of the best Swedish black metal albums ever! The album that defined the latter Swedish Black Metal sound, filled with Epic freezing cold guitar riffs, blasting drums & sinister vocal arrangements.
