Finland has long been the 'hotbed' for funereal doom, from seminal and often imitated 90s works like Skepticism's Stormcrowfleet or Thergothon's Stream from the Heavens to more contemporary mutations circa Shape of Despair, Wormphlegm and so forth. Entering this gauntlet of sorrows is Profetus, a younger band with a few years of history, which doesn't so much seek to refine this niche as it does to present it in a tidy, spacious and haunting environment that is admittedly effective despite its tendency to drag on. Having no real exposure to their earlier Coronation of the Black Sun, this is my first waltz with their brand of sullen lamentation, but I've come away feeling a proper enough air of snuffed illumination and gaping despair that I feel it's worth chasing down if you're fond of the stuff.Comparatively, I'd say that Profetus follows the framework established by its countrymen in the mid-90s as far as the riffing itself. Yet the production here trades out that oblique, raw dirt of its predecessors for a cleaner, rustic aesthetic streamlined with its lyrics. Where some past funeral doom recordings have felt like they seeped at your spirit from forsaken crypts or empty castle walls, ...To Open the Passages in Dusk seems to skirt the forest canopy at dusk, or sail across the lake waters on wings of precipitous regret. The drawn out gutturals drift alongside the dirge-like majesty of the drudging chords, and the organ sounds are omnipresent, proving just as crucial to the atmosphere as any other instrument. Passages of mournful, quiet clean vocals or whispers are woven through the hour long elegy, especially the opener "When Autumn Cries a Fiery Canticle" in which we get a broad taste for the band's glorious, snail paced riffing structures which lurch along with all the grim certainty of a Sunday afternoon at the cemetery.If I've got any serious complaint, it's the same that I could make for many albums of this type: a distinct lack of variation in the tracks which asserts that a listener really be in the mood to invest the full hour into its ineffable sadness. At several points ("The Watchers Dusk") the languid beat of the drum is sheathed to let the aura of mourning ring out into the twilight, but the mood and individual style of the guitar progressions does not differ enough that you ever feel a sense of the unexpected cropping up into the meat of the material; and when a track is passing the 17 minute mark, as in "The Shoreless", I really seek a sense of diversion somewhere in its depths. That said, the four quadrants of this sophomore are quite consistent, to the point that it's impossible to favor one over another. No bad to take with the good, or vice versa, just 58 minutes of sinking dreams and strangled hopes, all drowned in the record's commodious, depressing clarity. Tissues not included.

Chaos Vault (9/10):
Trochę kazali na siebie czekać, ale w końcu wylazł z otchłani piekielnych nowy album Funerus i wydaje mi się, że nie tylko ku mojej uciesze. Mało znany to zespół, ale każdy, kto był na Blitzkriegu 4 w 2007 roku myślę, że ich zapamiętał, bo dali krótki, ale bardzo intensywny koncert.
Ja w każdym razie ich zapamiętałem i od tego momentu polubiłem. Jak by ktoś jeszcze nie wiedział to kapele tą tworzy John McEntee (na co dzień udzielający się w Incantation) wraz z małżonką i jeszcze jednym jegomościem. Na tej płycie wokale uskutecznia właśnie Jill – matka, żona i zajebiście growlująca wokalistka. Ja osobiście mam pewno uprzedzenie do płci pięknej wydającej z siebie ryki, wrzaski i tego typu dźwięki, ale przyznam, że pani Jill radzi sobie doskonale, bo jej wokale kopią po pysku i wraz z pozostałymi instrumentami tworzą machinę zniszczenie po ataku, której nie pozostaje kamień a kamieniu. Ich drugi długograj zatytułowany „Reduced to Sludge” to moim zdaniem jeden z lepszych materiałów w tym roku powstałych za oceanem. Ochłap ten to jedenaście numerów śmierdzącego, soczystego i jadowitego Death Metalu w wolnych i średnich tempach. Są tu zarówno kawałki dla wielbicieli szybkiego i brutalnego pogowania pod sceną jak i dla miłośników miarowego machania dynią. Słowem każdy maniak metalu śmierci znajdzie na tym krążku coś dla siebie. Dla mnie największą perełką tej płyty jest numer „Death of a God” – zajebista zmiana tempa i przede wszystkim jeden riff, który nie może mi umknąć z podświadomości – doskonały kawałek podobnie jak i cała płyta.
Okazuje się, że i płeć piękna może mieć spory wkład w historie Death Metalu a kobiece dobrze wyćwiczone gardło nie przydaje się jedynie w pornosach.

W języku polskim utarło się powiedzenie, że ktoś jest bardziej papieski od papieża, jednakże jak wiemy, metalom nie przystoi takie słownictwo, jeśli nie łączy się go z wulgaryzmami, postulują trochę inną wersję tego samego.
Bardziej szwedzcy od Szwedów. Pięknie, prawda? Nasunęło mi się ono podczas słuchania debiutanckiej płyty amerykańskiego Fatalist, a spowodowane to było faktem, iż „The Depths of Inhumanity” brzmi tak zajebiście szwedzko, jakby było efektem orgii pomiędzy członkami Nihilist, Grave, Dismember. Po dziewięciu miesiącach na świat wyszedł twór zwany właśnie Fatalist, którego jedynym celem jest grać tak, jak robią to jego protoplaści. Hmm, może zbyt pejoratywnie to zabrzmiało, wcale nie miałem takiego zamiaru, bo trzeba przyznać, że Amerykanie mielą bardzo przyjemnie. Niskie gitary o chropowatym brzmieniu przypominającym fakturą papier ścierny, całkiem czytelny growling, tempa od średnich do szybkich, kilka niezłych solówek – ot typowy szwedzki death metal w niezłym stylu. Panowie nie silą się na oryginalność, nie szukają nowych rozwiązań, zapewne w ogóle ich to nie interesuje i szczerze mówiąc, lepsze to niż mieliby robić z siebie durniów i wplatać w te porządne, krwiste riffy jakieś chórki, klawirki, czy ciul wie co tam jeszcze. Rasowe rżnięcie nie wymaga przecież jakichś wydumanych innowacji, bo jest dobrze tak jak jest – mocno, z kopytem i do przodu. Na „The Depths of Inhumanity” znalazły się utwory z demówki jak i całkiem nowe, oczywiście wszystkie ponownie nagrane. Przyznam, że nie słychać pomiędzy nimi jakiejś większej różnicy stylistycznej, co jest dodatkowym plusem. Dodatkowo, żeby utwierdzić się w przekonaniu, że marzeniem Fatalist jest szwedzkie obywatelstwo, wystarczy rzut oka na fotki promocyjne (kojarzy Wam się z czymś ten krzyż?), jak i na samo logo grupy. Wystarczy?
„The Depths of Inhumanity” to równa, mocna płyta, która musowo powinna zaistnieć w zbiorze maniaków skandynawskiego deciora. Zapewniam, że nie będą to pieniądze wyrzucone w błocko.

Mroczna Strefa (8/10):
Powiało chłodem. Czuć krew i zgniliznę... czyli wszystko gra. Ekipa z Filadelfii zdecydowała się na wydanie pełnego krążka po 20 latach działalności (materiał nagrano w 2009 roku), więc, co sami przyznają , ta płyta to swego rodzaju wydawnictwo przekrojowe. We wspomnianym okresie członkowie zespołu nie obijali się, udzielając się w ABSU i MASTER. W muzyce Amerykanów od razu daje się wychwycić pewien specyficzny oldschoolowy klimat. O ile w wielu wypadkach takie podejście do granej muzyki mnie irytuje, o tyle w tym wypadku wyszło dość ciekawie. Sami członkowie GOREAPHOBIA wskazują na analogie do pierwszych płyt ENTOMBED i POSSESSED, ale dla mnie nie jest to takie oczywiste. Ta płyta ma swój specyficzny styl i nie słychać tu absolutnie (jak w niektórych wypadkach) czystego zrzynania z czyjejś twórczości. Już otwierający "Ordeal of the Abyss" sygnalizuje z czym mamy do czynienia - świetny, minimalnie blackujący growling z kapitalnie dobraną pod sekcję rytmiczną melodyką. Ten kawałek ma powera, tak po prostu i bez zbędnego napinania mięśni i młócenia na siłę. Utrzymany w średnim tempie posiada tę właśnie chwytliwość, która podświadomie nakazuje machać głową lub przynajmniej stukać palcami w blat stołu. Kolejne kawałki nieznacznie od niego odbiegają, może nie mają już tej przebojowości, ale w niczym to nie przeszkadza - odpowiednio częste zmiany szybkości, pozwalające jednak wystarczająco wczuć się w muzykę, a co za tym idzie, bardzo naturalne i przemyślane. Szósty z kolei kawałek, "Faded Into Ends Part 1" jest już z całkowicie innej beczki. Czysto instrumentalny, krótki, lecz strasznie przytłaczający utwór utrzymany w klimacie znanym z COUNT RAVEN, którego dalszy ciąg (Part 2) został dość sprytnie dołączony do przedostatniego, nieco szybszego numeru i stanowi jego dobre uzupełnienie. Ogólnie jest dość mrocznie i ciężko, całość utrzymana w wolnym i średnim tempie, przez co "Mortal Repulsion" zyskało świetną spójność. Nic na siłę wedle zasady - udowodnijmy, że potrafimy tworzyć muzykę, więc wpakujmy wszystko do każdego numeru. Tak naprawdę - nie muszą niczego udowadniać. Właśnie ta wyczuwalna swoboda sprawia, że tej płyty słucha się bardzo dobrze. Staż w tym miejscu robi jednak swoje. Moim zdaniem GOREAPHOBIA zaserwowali naprawdę dobrą, ciężką płytę z ogromną dawką czystego jak łza death metalu. Jeśli jeszcze dodam, że w proces pisania utworów zamieszany był zaprzyjaźniony z zespołem John McEntee z INCANTATION, wiecie czego możecie się spodziewać po tym wydawnictwie.

Macabra are unlike other modern death metal bands for two reasons: one, both members reside in different places of the world, forming an international death metal collaboration; and two, they are completely old-school, and in opposition to the sudden onset of Swedeath-worshipping trendy bands flourishing and appealing greatly to the crowds, they don’t sound at all like that. These features allow them both to surpass most death metal that is currently being released and bring to mind a fantastic old-school death metal influence from when the genre was at its finest.
Practically a second after the album commences its journey full of old-school material, you are met with the relieving wave of a very raw production. This tips the odds in their favor greatly, and contrary to what many may now be thinking, the guitars are perfectly audible. The rough, gritty sound only adds to their music and allows them to widen the listener’s appeal to the already innate stellar riffing. Where the album definitely succeeds the most is in the guitars, and these consequentially succeeding in their sheer simplicity and overall catchy and appealing quality. There is an overt old-school death metal influence sprinkled--no, flung in, circa early Death and, even more present, early Autopsy. They have a brand of very simple yet effective riffing that will definitely remind the listener of these bands among many, many others that focused on a slightly more sloppy and raw style of death metal. The tempos are always kept at a steady, relatively slow, mid-paced speed, the riffs chugging along and the drums following behind somewhat hastily.
The riffs are usually very sludgy, droney, and often also doomy, all of which are characteristics that will, as previously stated, remind listeners of early Autopsy. Songs like “Hominal Peel Diggers (The Swarm of Necrobies)” and “Life is the Symptom (Thy Entrails Rot)” show this in their intros; the former soon lapsing into a very catchy death/thrash riff. The vocals alternate between both low growls and high gutturals. Typically use of low growls is more prominent, but the latter will sneak in on occasion. The drumming is similar to the guitars, i.e. also slow and humble; however, more intermittently, a blast beat will present itself (as will some decent double-bass work), such as at 1:16 in “Hominal Peel Diggers.” Alongside the drums in this particular part, the riff is that of a tremolo-picked one, also an uplifting quality on this album; yet these being less predominant throughout the length of the album. There is practically no use of melodies, which is definitely a good thing in this case. There is some use of eerie passages, yet not that much, and they are not the main focus nor the best trait of this record.
If you’re looking for some new old-school death metal (pardon the oxymoron), you need look no further than Macabra. With “Blood-Nurtured Nature,” they’ve successfully established themselves as one of the better death metal bands that are currently releasing new material. This album prevails from the fact that their music is so raw, so dirty, so undeniably old-school and incredibly simple yet magnificent that the listener will be greatly pleased and satisfied until the last song finally subsides; unfortunately ending the album and leaving one with a craving for more.

It had been a couple of years since the last release by Fetid Zombie, the Abort the Messiah EP. With Vomiting in the Baptismal Blood, this one-man outfit hasn't wimped out a bit. Visceral gore-ish Death Metal is the name of the game here with song names that leave no room for interpretation. The music has a more thrashy vibe here and there, with some razor-sharp Thrash-style riffs zipping by the otherwise Death Metalesque onslaught.
I keep coming back to this album because it is surprisingly catchy and several songs have been stuck in my head since the first time I heard them – this doesn't mean it's suddenly pretty music, but the way sole member Mark Riddick has arranged things this time around, be it vocals or music, it just sticks in your head. The vocals are a mix of sick growls and harsh but kind of clean and intelligible vocals that nonetheless unequivocally convey the spite. When the music doesn't sound like a bulldozer on a path of destruction, a sick disturbing atmosphere carries a similar effect. It's been a while since I gave Fetid Zombie's earlier material an attentive listen, but this is probably the best yet. Good stuff.

Shimetsu, meanwhile, are offering classic Old school death metal with Grind death elements over a full 10 Tracks. Both bands are capable of unleashing some truly devastating riffs, with Shimetsu's even more overwhelmingly powerful.

Total drone. This disc is a collection of four unique improvisations, all recorded in one evening by Germany’s B*SON. The first improv is along the lines of SUNN; a hypnotic, heavy, distorted sludge fest. The second is full of overlapping loops & delays, which builds louder & denser at a snail’s pace, eventually incorporating percussive string jabs. The third incorporates feedback, leading into a low end distorted hum, accented by cleanly plucked notes over the din. The fourth and final track is closer to a full bore noise track than a drone, with thumping heartbeat percussion, and ghostly whisps of feedback and vocals. I didn’t realize this label was still around (Matthias has got to be going on over 20 years by now). High quality cover with copper ink & cool graphics; classy & a wee bit arty, not unlike a Southern Lord release. Handnumbered edition of 600 copies. 67 minutes worth of high quality sounds to zone-out to.

With a name like Diorrhea, the band probably gets a lot of shit (that was unintentional) from punters; but I have to say I believe that it is a very befitting title to have, seeing as the music they churn out is reasonably revolting, happens to comes upon you extremely fast, and before you know it you've crapped your pants. I guess the only difference between the two is that Diorrhea (the band) is enjoyable.
It seems to me that Italy, over the last couple of years, has really started to redeem itself by churning out some decent metal. Although some of these bands have turned to the more mainstream avenues, where everything is clean and respectable, others, like Diorrhea, have been shunned into the sewers to keep the rat population under control, mainly by use of their music. The best way to describe this unholy racket is to imagine you were to play this album, _B-XVI_, to a bunch of unsuspecting pedestrians. At the end of this ordeal, the ones that were still alive would probably file charges against you for (ear) rape.
Fast, abusive and completely in Italian (not that it is that comprehensible most of the time), these guys also have a humorous vibe throughout every song, as though Municipal Waste decided to play grindcore instead of thrash. With title names like "Automassacro" and "Necrostupro", you can tell that these aren't exactly the most stable of people themselves -- and those were just the titles that I had some idea of what they were about. I nearly went to a professional translator to get them translated, but lost the bottle to do so when I realised they may think I was completely messed up in the head. Apart from a strange name, freakish and cheesy horror-flick-esque song titles, the band integrated various sound sequences from orgies / killings (I seriously couldn't tell which one it was), an Italian rap section during the last song "Birra", and what I can only guess was a couple of lines from an Italian soap opera.
So if you're a fan of good-ole-grindcore, horny gorilla grunts, rabies infected yelps, and imitations of ambulance sirens, then you are obviously deeply disturbed and this band would provide a great soundtrack to your lunatic lifestyle.
