AXIS OF PERDITION - The Ichneumon Method LP

AXIS OF PERDITION - The Ichneumon Method LP
AXIS OF PERDITION - The Ichneumon Method LP

The Axis of Perdition re-issue of their debut opus through now available on vinyl!

Back from the vortex of non-existence, England’s industrial black metal vanguards return to remind us of the damage once done by their haunted first full-length, “The Ichneumon Method (And Less Welcome Techniques)”. After well over a decade since its original release, it turns out to still possess the powers to inject sonic poison into the listener’s system, squeeze one’s stomach with cacophonous riffing, and literally make one feel lost amidst the sickening verses and dirty digital rhythms. In times when the word ‘dissonant’ means anything but ‘dangerous’, the twisted qualities of “The Ichneumon Method” might be a remedy for those who still seek truly extreme experiences in 2017.

The new vinyl mix and mastering done by Haldor Grunberg at Satanic Audio is a guarantee that The Axis of Perdition’s praised debut is once again able to eat you from the inside.

BEGRABNIS / ESTRANGEMENT - Split CD (ecopak)

BEGRABNIS / ESTRANGEMENT - Split CD (ecopak)
BEGRABNIS / ESTRANGEMENT - Split CD (ecopak)

Japanese ambient/industrial doom Begrabnis VS Australian avantgarde schizophrenic funeral doom Estrangement.
Begrabnis started as 4 piece doom band with real drummer. After their drummer left in 2012, they started to use drum machine and add some ambient/industrial elements and thelmin, which makes their music much more unique one. Their vocalist is female, but don't expect ethereal beautiful clean one. It's extremely horrific dark voices which reminds me of witch's curse.
Estrangement is one of the most unique band under the banner of “Funeral Doom”. They mix a lof of elements, classical music with violin, cello, flute, piano and classical guitar, furious black/thrash metal riffs, and of course slow dismal doom! The scene is changing rapidly which is really schizophrenic!
Both bands expand the horizon of the land of doom and it's time to conquer new frontier!

COLOSUS - Blestem CD (digisleeve)

COLOSUS - Blestem CD (digisleeve)
COLOSUS - Blestem CD (digisleeve)

Dark Ambient Black Metal Soul Torture.

Solo-project of SIDIOUS’ drummer Krhudd, COLOSUS is darkness incarnate. A crushing, heavy, desperate and intense journey into blasphemy, pain, destruction, torture and endless agony.

Colosus is all about darkness, but not the usual Black Metal way. Building monolithic landscapes of desolation through an Ambient cold world where only physical pain and soul torture are the parts making up the hopeless horizon, through blasts of rage like picking a victim at random and nailing it to a cross, leaving it breathless, suffocating to death, before singling out the next one.

Colosus is that land of agony and torture and Krhudd is the executioner. “Blestem” is the perfect soundtrack for that cinematic roaming through plains of devastation. Willing to stay anonymous, Krhudd has already been working with Kaotoxin records on some previous releases, Colosus is a stand-alone outlet for all that is hatred, vengeance and destruction.

CULPER RING - 355 CD

CULPER RING - 355 CD
CULPER RING - 355 CD

Culper Ring is a side project of Kris Force (AmberAsylum), Mason Jones (Subarachnoid Space), and Steve Von Till (Neurosis, Tribes of Neurot).

The project began in 1997 with the recording of a jam session in Kris's home studio. These initial assets were characteristically unmusical and discordant, analogous to the classic 80's experimental work of Coil or Nurse with Wound. The tapes collected dust as the musicians returned to their respective projects.

When these recordings were revisited some time later, the trio found itself turning in a more melodically driven and acoustic-oriented direction. Again time passed and it would not be until the year 2001 that this music would be solidified into its current form. Committed to the idea of an integral CD experience, the three musicians discovered territory which allowed the material to coalesce, with the newer, more musical work combined with the earlier soundscapes.

FORMALIST - No One Will Shine Anymore CD (digipak)
The FORMALIST unit was founded in 2014 when long-time associated individuals from the Italian heavyweights FORGOTTEN TOMB [vocals], MALASANGRE [bass & drums] and VISCERA/// [guitars] joined forces with the aim to open new gates to total sonic horrors. Excelling in the art of low-tuned sickness, the band members managed to forge together their many influences and proceeded to write and record the first full-length album during summer 2016, featuring 3 songs for a nightmarish 40 minutes length where extreme Doom, Black Metal, Sludge and Ambient/Drone combined with a completely hostile, nihilistic approach to vocals and lyrics. This is "No One Will Shine Anymore".

Heralded as one of the progenitors of black ambient music, Funerary Call returns from dormancy with his darkest release to date. "Dark Waters Stirred" is a ceremonial maelstrom of ominous electronics and dark ambient textures, an audial descent into ritualistic obscurity and misanthropy. GHAST / ABANDONER - Split CD
GHAST / ABANDONER - Split CD

Two tracks each from bands coming at dark heaviness from different ends of the spectrum, but who compliment each other perfectly.
The two Ghast tracks are painfully slow, heavy and unrelentingly repetitive funeral dirges of ultradoom. There are some definite sludge ovetones going on there but this is definitely for fans of bleak doom/sludge: think Moss/Burning Witch/Corrupted etc
Abandoner is Jay and Ryan from Unearthly Trance but this is a different proposition altogether: post-indutrial soundscapes, this is almost like an alternative soundtrack to Eraserhead. Drenched in feedback, almost lost vocals, buzzing, processed guitar all come together in a MASSIVE dark, almost symphonic whole. Total void music.

HAIKU FUNERAL - Nightmare Painting CD

HAIKU FUNERAL - Nightmare Painting CD
HAIKU FUNERAL - Nightmare Painting CD

Third album from French dark electro act Haiku Funeral. An innovative, exciting and twisted nightmare. Haiku Funeral generate an atmosphere of black, bleak, ironic paradox. Cold industrial ambiance meets darkwave experimentation, liberally seasoned with death/doom and driven by the twin engines of pulsing, virtuoso bass and hoarse, snarling, savagely crazed voice. Horrifying imagery of death, madness and godless depravity, developing the musical themes to new levels of maturity and subversiveness. Whilst the listener is drawn in like a moth to a flame, by the appealing rhythms and textures of post-everything avant-garde, the darkest of messages is being whispered direct to their cortex.

HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA - Politics Of Irredeemable CD (digipak)

Human Quena Orchestra first took shape as a solo project from Ryan Unks, who had previously played guitar in the final lineup of the Pittsburgh metal band Creation Is Crucifixion. After moving from CIC, Unks began to work on a new project that would incorporate elements of black metal, crushing drone music, extreme psychotropic noise and psychedelic/krautrock influences into a sound that would be much heavier any of his previous projects. The first album from Human Quena Orchestra was released in 2007 on Daft Alliance; Means Without Ends was a disturbing, introspective slab of blackened industrial doom that stood out in stark contrast from the rest of the slow n' low extreme doom scene, utilizing layers of harsh textured distortion and electronics to create a caustic form of monstrous doom that shared as much of industrial music's cold, machine-like aesthetic as it did the ultra-slow riffage of the most extreme variants of doom metal. LEVIATHAN - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life CD (digipak)

LEVIATHAN - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life CD (digipak)
LEVIATHAN - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life CD (digipak)
Fourth full length of this US black metal/ambient one-man band!

Massive Conspiracy Against All Life was not a step forward in every way for Leviathan, and I wouldn't call it my favourite of his albums, but it is Wrest at his boldest. As much as The Tenth Sub-Level of Suicide deserves its own shade of legend, MCAAL is sharp and ambitious enough to have placed Leviathan in the big leagues. This bottomless pit calculated chaos can be a hard beast to tame, and if Leviathan's core songwriting was less vibrant this time around, I think it's excused on the merit that he was pushing himself hard in other ways. As the album with the dubious honour of being caught between eras, MCAAL is a perfect introduction to Leviathan, both old and new. It cannot justly be compared directly with the weirder stuff he was doing earlier; one cannot stay in the cradle forever, despite all of the primitive charms that come with youth. This album brought Wrest's execution to a level on par with the best modern black metal has to offer, and the leap forward opened new doors of possibility for the band as a whole. WithScar Sighted seven years later in 2015, and we're seeing the dismal buds of this album come full bloom at last.

LEVIATHAN - Tentacles Of Whorror CD (digipak)

LEVIATHAN - Tentacles Of Whorror CD (digipak)
LEVIATHAN - Tentacles Of Whorror CD (digipak)
Second full length of this US black metal/ambient one-man band!

Wrest presents us with a gothic and ambient work of metal art. The vocals are eerily processed, with guitar dissonance every chance there is. Like many album covers of the genre, it is a simple black-and-white portrait (here depicting monster-on-monster mayhem). Also of the genre's repertoire is the fact of Leviathan being a one-man-band (Burzum, Judas Iscariot, etc.). That said, Wrest does a very good job in astounding us that this is actually true.

The drums are programmed (again, not uncommon), but give us blast beats that could give Hellhammer a run for his money. Black metal purists may criticize for it not sounding "raw enough" - though I think that it's disturbing ambience and unholy vocals could overpower that aspect. "Tentacles of Whorror" also has it's share of lengthy tracks (as per usual for black metal) and keeps them going with foreboding choirs of hell and background satanic mischief.

Scary, hypnotic, unsettling (perhaps a good choice if you want scare the pants off of trick-or-treaters).

MAJESTIC DOWNFALL / ANSIA - Split CD

MAJESTIC DOWNFALL / ANSIA - Split CD
MAJESTIC DOWNFALL / ANSIA - Split CD

This Split CD introduces two brand new bands to all metal heads all over the world. Each one has it’s own sound and visions of modern doom metal.
Majestic Downfall (Mexico) is a one-man-band, which recaptures the feeling of the 90’s European Doom Metal scene, while mixing it with some more modern Doom Metal overtones.
Main idea of Ansia (Italy) is to find new sounds in the doom scene. Atmospheric music is interesting due to its specific sound. Ansia’s part of the Split has been mixed by Alessio Fagrelli (ex-session keyboards for Deinonychus), who also plays piano on the song “Part I”.

MORS SONAT - Comforts In Atrocity CD (digipak)

MORS SONAT - Comforts In Atrocity CD (digipak)
MORS SONAT - Comforts In Atrocity CD (digipak)

Though the name may be new, Mors Sonat is comprised of personnel well known to those who explore the more terrifying sounds found at the intersection of black metal, industrial noise, power electronics and black ambience. Featuring Mories (Gnaw Their Tongues, Aderlating, Cloak of Altering, De Magia Veterum) and Australian black noise / metal technician Nekrasov, this collaboration sounds little like their other projects. Here, the the pair crafts a cold, hallucinatory strain of aural dread that draws from a strange mixture of twilight chamber music, ghastly death industrial sounds, harsh electronic noise and gleaming dark ambient, while tapping into the sort of psychic unease and violent chaos that will be familiar to fans of their previous efforts. Across six long tracks, Comforts in Atrocity blends darkly gorgeous chamber music sounds (aided by guest cellist Aaron Martin), blasts of excoriating black noise, pools of cloudy dark ambience, clanking industrial horror and vicious bouts of power electronics abuse. Incorporating the creaking crypt ambience of opener “Holy Holy Holy Nil” with gorgeous cello drones, shimmering orchestral strings and smeared horns, the duo lays down a highly evocative mix of layered electronic noise and atmospheric sound that builds into walls of howling chaos.  Fans of the shambling, chthonic evil of Mories’ other projects and Nekrasov’s black-hole visions will find some of their classic power electronics and death industrial elements in Mors Sonat’s sound, but it’s tempered by haunting chamber strings and ritualistic ambience, diffused into a kind of grim, otherworldly soundscape all its own.

NEKRASOV - Extinction CD (digipak)

NEKRASOV - Extinction CD (digipak)
NEKRASOV - Extinction CD (digipak)

Riding atop the recent wave of black metal/noise hybrids who combine the bleak frosty riffs and blackened ferocity of underground BM with blown-out and corrosive strains of industrial noise (see also WOLD, Emit, Grief No Absolution, Enbilulugugal, Vargr), the Australian one-man band Nekrasov has so far made a substantial mark in the realm of extremist necro-racket with a series of limited edition, brutally abrasive albums (Cognition Of Splendid Oblivion, The Form Of Thought From Beast, etc) that have mostly been self-released, save for some recent offerings on labels like Siege Of Power and Chrome Leaf. Early on, Nekrasov's sound was steeped in caustic noise, a blazing industrialized black metal assault that was doused in heavy levels of irradiated distortion and Merzbowian skree. But more recently, it's mutated into less metallic regions, alternating the hyperblast black metal with forays into crushing, demonic wall-noise and blasted ambience. Now, Nekrasov is back with a new full length (the first for Crucial Blast), and it's the most advanced slab of their blacknoize terror that we've heard so far. An octagonal prism of isolationist drone, flesh-rending mechanical black metal, abstract otherworldly beauty, claustrophobic industrial dread, and the most violent, suffocating strains of harsh noise, Extinction is pure cyclonic contempt for humanity.

NEKRASOV / MOON (AUS) / NEKROS MANTEIA - 3-Way Split CD

THE HAUNTING RESONANCE - 3-Way Split

From the burgeoning Australian label Fall Of Nature comes this brilliant 3-way split of projects from down under, and when I say ‘down under’, I don’t just mean in location, but spiritually. This is about as bleak, and depressing as it gets. This is a concept album of sorts, as stated in the liner notes it’s “regarding the subject matter of ghosts, spirits, phantoms” and what would their relationships be to one another if all life on earth ended. With a few intense listens, I began to have a pretty good idea.

NEUROSIS - Honor Found In Decay CD (SLIPCASE)

NEUROSIS - Honor Found In Decay CD (SLIPCASE)
NEUROSIS - Honor Found In Decay CD (SLIPCASE)

IN A SHADOW WORLD
An introduction to Neurosis’ Honor Found In Decay

It is said that great art has the power to take us outside of ourselves and bring us closer to ourselves simultaneously. Few bands have accomplished this rare feat on a more profound and consistent basis than Neurosis. For nearly three decades, their music has touched the hearts and minds of young men and women seeking contact with something beyond the physical world, something intangible, something that expresses the inner tumult of the human condition in a way that transcends time and space. Something that not only provokes questions but maybe even hints at answers.

In 1996, I was one of those young men. I was 20 years old when I heard Through Silver In Blood, and I could never listen to music the same way again. The album was—and is—so dense, so turbulent, so different than anything I had heard before. It was—and is—like its own weather system. It didn’t just challenge me to think differently; it forced me to. It opened doors that lay beyond the confines of my own narrow experience. Best of all—to an aspiring “writer” at least—the band’s lyrics seemed to be saying something. Not about politics or religion or society or even interpersonal relationships, but about the life of the mind. And the words could be applied to modern life as readily as life a thousand years ago—or three thousand years ago, when our gods were our own and almost everyone still had to fight for their daily bread.

With the passage of time and the accumulation of experience, Neurosis’ work has only become more engaging, more penetrating, more visceral and decimating. Similarly, the band has only become more cognizant of their purpose.

The music on Honor Found In Decay is both torturous and transcendent. It is the ongoing exposition of a vast internal dialogue that seems to carry the weight of eons. With the right kind of ears and eyes, it can seem like the trials and tribulations of mankind are being channeled through five individuals: Steve Von Till, Scott Kelly, Noah Landis, Jason Roeder and Dave Edwardson. And yet? They will be the first ones to tell you that they are just regular people trying to make sense of the world around them. The degree to which Neurosis allows them to step out of their everyday lives is the distance between one and zero, the distance between thinking and doing, the distance between this minute and the one that may or may not follow. Which is to say: Neurosis takes them outside of themselves and brings them closer to themselves. Simultaneously.

NEUROSIS - Live At Roadburn 2007 CD

NEUROSIS - Live At Roadburn 2007 CD
NEUROSIS - Live At Roadburn 2007 CD

This will be my last letter. I’m tired of trying to make you understand. Hell, I’m tired of trying to understand. After this, you won’t be hearing from me again. I’m not coming back.

You know where everyone has it wrong about Neurosis? The mind. Look at the legion of imitators and you’ll see they’re like children trying to build a treehouse without instructions. There are mathematical equations being done, but they’re the wrong ones. Emotion plus volume. The cerebellum gets all the credit, but this music comes from the stomach. Listen to the washes at the back of “Water is Not Enough.” Listen to the grimacing cries of “At the End of the Road,” the mortal desolation of “A Season in the Sky.” You’ll hear it or you’re a fool.

Not that it’s perfect. That isn’t the idea. It’s the humanity you’re getting here. The raw stuff of human performance. The need to transmit from one to another an idea, shape, sound. It is as close to authenticity as we come.

What do you think they called a square the first time saw it drawn in the dirt? It was a thing without a name. It was a creation inextricably tied to the one who crafted it. It was art. That’s what this is, delivered at painful volume to ears that, if they could, would scream back as if to say, “I’m here too, I can see it now. It is even on all sides.”

Imagine what it must have been like to have Neurosis step out on that stage. The 013 Popcentrum, Tilburg. Roadburn. An event unlike anything else the world over, and Neurosis with a legacy of carved granite. It must have been like rivers joining, flowing in the same direction. Forces of nature.

There are nine tracks on this release. As you listen, set aside expectation. Put away your thoughts about what you think the work should or does sound like. It is not about the definitive. It is the execution. The temporal and the fleeting. You need to understand: This is the moment, captured. Emotion plus volume. They’ve been doing it one way or another since Reagan.

If you’re still reading this, you know the deal. That year they released Given to the Rising, which was the black to The Eye of Every Storm’s grey, and to the red of A Sun that Never Sets, and the hard lines of Times of Grace, and so on. The material is fresh, vibrant and unrelenting. Even when it breathes, you don’t. Two years later they’d be asked to curate their Beyond the Pale Festival under the Roadburn banner, hand-picking the artists with whom they would share the stage for their return performance. This is the genesis of that.

Like they say: “Sun-whitened bones in a landscape of hounds.” We’re those hounds, you and I. All we can do is feast, chew endlessly and hope to get a bit of marrow. Break our teeth on it. And maybe understand. I’m tired of trying to make you understand. So tired.

THAW - Grains CD (digipak)
THAW - Grains CD (digipak)

Digipack CD.

Recorded during sessions scattered over various periods of time, "Grains" are not just another step forward for the already acclaimed band. The album divided into five pieces evolves in multiple directions. There is THAW's trademark take on black metal noise, there is drone, last but not least – there is the ability to conduct a unique narrative with music. Intensity combined with abandoning traditional structures make the new effort of one of the most forward-thinking bands an experience one of a kind. A distorted landscape where creation meets destruction perfectly painted.

"Grains" has been once again recorded and produced by THAW at Maq Records Studio and Satanic Audio. A cover painting made by Furia's Sars as well as appearances of Maciej Moruś (Mitch and Mitch, ex-Starzy Singers) and Stawrogin (Odraza) only add to the album's mystery and weird magnetis.
