Brighton based ANACONDAS formed back in 2010 from the ashes of acclaimed English band Johnny Truant who had blazed their way through the noughties with their frenetic, forward-thinking take on modern metallic hardcore.
During the final breaths of Truant, Stuart Hunter (guitars) initially conceived a much more stripped down, instrumental based project; dense and progressively sludge driven, balancing immense heaviness and delicate melody in equal measure. Re-united with brother and co ex truant James Hunter (bass) and with mutual friend Tim Newman on drums, the project became a fully realised band with all three now sharing vocal duties in barbarous harmony. This is ANACONDAS.
Huge riffs, provoking resonant passages and driving rhythms draw influence from bands such as Cave-In, Pelican, Alice In Chains and Meshuggah yet with a distinctly British edge which to these ears reminds somewhat of a post-metal Swervedriver, which can only be a good thing.
Once the power trio had solidified, ANACONDAS began recording what would become their debut album, ‘Sub Contra Blues’, in a local studio in Brighton and enlisted British producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death) to master the sessions. Upon completion the band began promoting the recordings themselves, garnering extensive press support on their own from the likes of Metal Hammer UK, Rocksound, Terrorizer and a plethora of online media. Already developing as a potent live force, ANACONDAS have been premiering their ‘Sub Contra Blues’ set live alongside Torche and Earthtone9 amongst others.
The ‘Sub Contra Blues’ recordings immediately caught the attention of Prosthetic Records who signed the band in the Summer of 2013. The album is now scheduled for international release in October and a schedule of extensive live dates is set to follow…
The three-piece have delivered a debut full-length to write home about here, being crushingly heavy and unabashedly melodic and catchy all at the same time, towing that difficult line to effect as juddering sludge and angular noisecore meet grunge influences and even Jesu-like droning passages on Sub Contra Blues for a serious melting pot of sounds that, while disparate, coalesce beautifully into one cohesive record.
Anacondas deserve much praise for this record, especially considering that it’s a debut and with any justice, it will garner the right attention for the band and stick out from the crowd. 8/10 - Ghost Cult Magazine
It’s a heady mix for heavy music fans but it’s the kind of interesting fusion of sounds that should resonate just as well with metal lifers used to getting their ribcages crushed by riffs as with the casual rock fan looking for an extra slice of heaviness. Sub Contra Blues is a worthy debut.
